June CHRISTY w. Johnny GuarnieriA Friendly Session, Vol. 1

Would you believe that June Christy was only
four years old when she made these recordings? No, she was not a child prodigy,
but actually, as far as music is concerned, the name 'June Christy' simply did
not exist until Summer, 1945. It happened this way: On 20th November, 1925, a
girl, christened Shirley, was born into the Luster family of Springfield,
Illinois, and Shirley only ever had one dream - to sing. By the time she was
thirteen she was regularly alternating her schoolwork with local dance band
dates, and 1943 found her trying her luck in Chicago. At first the Windy City
was unwelcoming. She found occasional work, in sleazy cocktail lounges, with
Mickey Mouse bands, but nothing regular, nothing challenging, nothing
satisfying. Then Fortune smiled - she landed a job with Boyd Raeburn, who was
currently honing the band with which he would soon make his powerful if
short-lived contribution to jazz. Shirley should have been part of all that but
disaster struck - a severe attack of scarlet fever. By March, 1944, Boyd was
making headlines in New York City. Shirley was convalescing in
Springfield!.
