Many big bands followed a trend originally set by Tommy Dorsey which was to form a 'band-within-a band'. By using just a few members of their own orchestras big band names were able to create more spontaneous jazz through the musical freedom of a smaller group.

Featuring many great standards and original rare recordings that offer an insight into the development of many big names including: Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Gene Krupa, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Harry James and Duke Ellington.
