There are just a few things that can and generally go wrong on a jazz date, but the session that produced this album was a quite remarkable exception. Everything went right from the start. There was a great feeling of co-operation amongst all concerned, and the result is one of the most enjoyably unpretentious albums of British jazz yet recorded. We do all our Tempo session recordings at the Decca studios in Broadhurst Gardens, just round the corner from West Hampstead tube station. This session was due to start at 4.30 p.m. that day. I walked into Studio One to find the boys had been there for 15 minutes and were already running down one of the tunes.
