career in popular music, that he never quite achieved the fame his rich talent
deserved. His wonderful legacy of work for Shaw and Miller has given him a
position among the all-time arranging elite but somehow it is those arrangements
and many original compositions that have become more famous than the man who
penned them. Leading his own orchestra, Jerry never attained the world-wide
acclaim that attended some of his contemporaries; perhaps it was that natural
reluctance of his to be a bandleader that prevented greater recognition. Be that
as it may, Jerry Gray made a magnificent contribution to popular dance music and
arrangements such as those selected for this collection, plus others like "In
The Mood" and "Chattanooga Choo Choo" (for Miller) and "The Carioca" (for Shaw),
are a lasting testament to his artistry.
