George MORGANCandy Kisses Are The Best Of All

Not a bad way to start a Country chart career: write
yourself a smash number one hit which is enviously copied by numerous other
artists. That is exactly what George Morgan did in 1949 with "Candy
Kisses".George had written and was performing "Candy Kisses" in 1948, before he
had gained a record contract, and it was this song which led COLUMBIA to sign
him ahead of rivals RCA. His first record release, it became a million-seller
and the Country hit of 1949, in the process beating off cover versions from
established artists like Elton Britt, Red Foley and Cowboy Copas. No surprise
that George named his first daughter Candy! Success not only brought a welcome
stream of royalties, it gave him a place at the "Grand Ole Opry" and he was
quickly established as a Country star. However, after 1949 the hits were slow in
coming and he had to wait until 1952 before a number two strike with "Almost".
The future pattern was set: another hit in 1953, nothing until 1957, and
following that a number three in 1959 with "I’m In Love Again".
