Red MURRELLSittin' On Top Of The World
Western Swing is a generic term applied to a
particular brand of Country Music, a style that is essentially traditional
string band music, dominated by the fiddle, with a hint of Jazz, or in some
cases more than a hint of jazz. Bands, principally from Texas and Oklahoma, led
by the likes of Bob Wills, Milton Brown, and Cliff Bruner were at the forefront
of the development of Western Swing in the 1930's. The Second World War heralded
a new age for the music. The large-scale migration across the United States
brought about by the war, especially from the Southwest to California, led to a
greater demand for Western Swing, along with other styles of music. The
burgeoning Western Swing scene on the West Coast in the early 1940's became a
Mecca for many musicians.
